When I lived in Hawaii, I was introduced to the traditions and deep respect the locals have for the ocean. It wasn’t just a place to swim or surf—it was sacred. The sea was powerful, life-giving, and unpredictable. Over time, I learned to understand and respect that power, realizing that the ocean wasn’t just beautiful, but healing too.
People often tell me, “Oh, I wish I lived on an island,” imagining a carefree, Instagram-worthy life of sandy toes and sunsets. But for me, it’s so much more than that. My connection to the ocean runs deeper than the aesthetics of beach life—it’s something spiritual. After my time in Hawaii, I knew I could never live far from the sea again.
The Healing Power of the Ocean
There’s something about the ocean that grounds me. When my anxiety flares up, and it feels like my world is spinning out of control, the ocean is the one place that brings me back to myself. It’s like the rhythm of the waves mirrors my breath, calming me down, reminding me that everything is okay.
The ocean cleanses me—not just physically, but emotionally. When I’m feeling overwhelmed or on the verge of imploding, I go to the sea, and it feels like my worries are carried away with the tide. I can stand at the water’s edge, let the waves lap over my feet, and feel all the stress I’ve been holding onto slip away.
Beyond Trends and Aesthetics
While beach life has become a trend for many, for me, it’s not about that. It’s not just an aesthetic or a backdrop for social media posts. It’s a connection that runs deep, rooted in the lessons I learned in Hawaii about the ocean’s power and the respect it deserves.
Living near the ocean isn’t just a lifestyle for me—it’s a necessity. It’s the one place where I feel truly grounded, at peace, and connected to something bigger than myself.
My Lifeline to Balance
So, while others might see the ocean as just a pretty view, for me, it’s a lifeline. It reminds me to slow down, breathe, and find balance. It’s my source of calm in a world that often feels too chaotic, and I’m grateful for the peace it brings me every day.
